“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”
Helen Keller

If you could make an impact on climate change by doing something quick, painless, and free, would you do it? I’m talking about making two calls in two minutes. In other words, in less time than it takes you to do Wordle.
Turning up the temperature
I know, I know, the whole point of my blog is to turn down the temperature of the climate conversation. But just for this one past I’m turning it up. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, what the US Senate does (or doesn’t do) in the next few weeks will change the trajectory of our future.
There is a very short window for Congress to take legislative action on investing in clean energy. To clarify, by very short, I’m talking about two weeks.
Two weeks
Why two weeks? Well, Congress is going on recess at the end of July. The sad fact is, when they return, the lawmaking gears will grind to a stop in preparation for the mid-terms. Realistically, inaction will set us back for the forseeable future.
Legislation is ready and waiting. The transition from fossil fuel is happening, but it needs a push. Along with millions of citizens, many leading US companies are urging Congress to act. And according to the recent report by the IPCC, action in the next few years is critical in order to avoid the worst outcomes.
The most impactful thing you can do
I am often asked what is the most impactful thing an individual can do to help reverse climate change. At this moment, it is to pick up the phone and call the two US Senators representing your state. Today. Ask them to act on climate before recess.
This isn’t a political blog. Climate change shouldn’t be about politics, and members of both parties care about protecting our future from the warming Earth. What we need is for them to do something about it. We just can’t afford to wait. It’s about our future…everyone’s future.
Two calls, two minutes
The fact that you’re reading this right now tells me you are among the majority of Americans who care. If everyone who cares made two calls, we could prompt action. Remember, our elected officials work for us.
Here is a directory of all Senators and their phone numbers. To reach a Senator’s office, dial 202-242, followed by the 4 digit extension.
You will most likely be leaving a message. Tell them what concerns you and ask them to do something. I made my two calls in under two minutes. It was painless. Will you join me?
Let’s do something about climate change. Learn about it. Think about it. Talk about it.
