“This is not a partisan debate; it is a human one. And solving this crisis is not a question of politics. It is our moral obligation.”
Leonardo DiCaprio
I know I’m not alone in saying my heart is hurting for the thousands of people whose lives have been devastated by Helene. While I wasn’t directly impacted by the storm, I have lived in North Carolina for over 30 years, so the tragedy in Western NC hits close to home.
The scope of the human toll is mind-boggling. It’s also a sad reminder of how a warmer climate is affecting real people. Today. People just like you and me around the US and the world are suffering because of climate-fueled events. The number affected will continue to grow until we bring down the global temperature.
How do we know climate change made this event more likely? Attribution data for a specific event takes time, but it is a meteorological fact that storm systems developing over hot oceans intensify faster, hold more water, and dump more rain along their paths.
Climate change is not about politics; it’s about people
One of the main things I’m trying to convey through Unheating is climate change isn’t a political issue… it’s about all of us. Each person impacted by a an extreme event is someone’s family member, friend, or neighbor.
Maybe you have already lived through a disaster and understand first-hand what it feels like. For those of us who haven’t, I bet by now one has hit close to home.
Please help with the recovery if you can, and let’s keep working on solutions. By solving climate change, we’re not just saving our home, we’re saving ourselves.
Let’s do something about climate change. Learn about it. Think about it. Talk about it.
